There has been a lot of talk about what the social trends will be in 2019.

Hootsuite conducted an annual report and has the answers for us.

The survey is based on more than 3,000 Hootsuite customers—from large enterprises to small agencies—conducted in late 2018. The report also included insights from interviews with dozens of industry analysts, as well as reports and data from Edelman, Gartner, GlobalWebIndex, Forrester, Econsultancy, Kleiner Perkins, We Are Social, and others.

There are lots of new strategies, ways of engaging and new formats that it’s going to be an exciting time to work in social media.

Here are Hootsuite’s top 5 social media trends for 2019:

1. Rebuilding trust

You may have heard about the issue Facebook faced 😉 earlier in 2018 and the pressure it caused for them to improve security and transparency.

Trust was a huge issue across social media this year, across the board. Especially with celebrities’ social accounts – where a lot of them were considered to be ‘hacked’ or ‘fake.’

2019 is really about smart companies focusing less on maximising reach and more on generating transparent, quality engagement.

2. Storifying social

The typical social media platform was predominantly used on desktop and is moving towards mobile-only usage, where people are creating in-the-moment stories.

Stories are overwhelmingly visual and meant to be created and consumed on the fly with nothing more than a smartphone and a creative eye. Because they’re ephemeral—often disappearing after a day—there’s more room for fun and experimentation. Stories feel real, immediate, and intensely personal.

So start investigating ‘stories’ and get familiar behind the camera!

3. Closing the ads gap

Social media ads are going to become more targeted. They will be more focused on being more personalised and entertaining.

In 2019, it’s important when you’re planning to run ads that they do the following:

  • Target the right people
  • Reaching your goals and metrics
  • Using high-quality content
  • Use what you’ve learned from previous campaigns
  • Embrace new ad formats

Rather than promoting any ad – plan, develop, test and learn in 2019.

4. Cracking the commerce code

Coming directly from Hootsuite , new and evolving technologies are changing, especially for young buyers.

Instagram’s shoppable posts allow users to go from discovery to checkout without ever leaving the app. And the platform has even added a Shopping tab to its Explore page.

Facebook’s Marketplace is now used in 70 countries by more than 800 million people. And on Pinterest, 55 percent of customers are using the site to find and shop for products.

And with YouTube there’s new formats—from in-stream buying plugins for Instagram to livestream shopping on WeChat—have emerged for integrating social video deeper into the buyer’s journey.

When incorporating this with your marketing strategy, it’s important to remember that what distinguishes social commerce from other channels is the social aspect. Finding ways to make shopping live, interactive, and seamless—even on mobile devices—is key.

5. Messaging eats the world

The top messaging apps – WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, QQ and Skype combine for nearly 5 billion monthly active users.

Users are spending more time on messaging and less time-sharing news on social. The shift from public to private spaces is changing consumer expectations and will continue to do so in 2019.

It’s important that in the coming year, businesses allow Facebook Messenger for their business pages.

Add plugins on your website that drive people to messaging apps and run campaigns that incorporate messaging aps.

Overall, it’s an exciting year ahead with new technological advancements – so don’t be afraid. Get amongst it!
